Stress management is an important aspect of life. Stress cannot be eliminated but has to be managed. It has to be managed such that we become the masters of stress and not its victims. One should understand that it is not problems but instead, it is the way one looks at them that creates stress.

“A moment of stress takes away the maximum efficiency with minimum friction”

Few Stress management techniques

Is today’s man living in the world of things or in world of thoughts or beyond both?

1.     Understanding stress

To handle stress there are 3 important realities in the realm of yoga. These are External reality, internal reality and transcendental reality.

1.1 External reality is the world of things
The external reality is the reality that we see, hear, smell and touch. We feel that in order to be happy, we have to possess more things, more objects, more of the materialistic or external world. We think our stress would be relieved; our happiness would increase, when we have the world of things. Therefore, we are busy trying to be successful. If we delve deeply, we will see that a person can be successful but need not be satisfied. We may possess a lot of things but if those things are not utilized wisely, they will not give us satisfaction. So the external reality is the world of things.

1.2 Internal reality is the world of thoughts
People can have beautiful houses, be very comfortable externally, but internally if in their thoughts they are tense, chaotic, they would find themselves comfortably uncomfortable. The internal reality is your mind.

“Mind is cause of bondage,
Mind is cause of freedom”

See the internal reality of your thoughts, your emotions and attune them wisely. You would then experience the world differently.

1.3 Transcendental reality is something beyond things and thoughts
A transcendental reality is that which goes beyond mind. Yoga says, you have to learn to even transcend your mind, which is both positive and negative and that is called the transcendental reality. Yoga says, you are the space in which thoughts come and go. Thought is only a cloud and you are the sky. The cloud can’t affect the sky and if you see yourself as the space and not the thought, then you would transcend thought.

2.     Self development: Seeing yourself

Anchor different parts of your body to with appropriate knowledge.

2.1 Ears: In life we listen to what we want to listen. Very few listen objectively.

2.2  Hands: Let your life be always giving, because the more you give the better are the chances of getting connected to existence.

2.3 Eyes: Let your eyes have the wisdom of seeing out of innocence and not out of arrogance. See “what is-as is” and “what is not - as is not”. Very few have the freedom to see ‘what is’ without opinion, without any judgment.

2.4  Legs: Walk on the path of truth, walk on the path of goodness. You may experience difficulty but understand that it is not to tumble you but to humble you. Therefore anchor your legs to this understanding-let me walk on the path of goodness. And when you walk on the path of goodness, then life becomes different.

2.5  Lips: If you can learn to smile, you will learn to be happy. Smile will develop the invisible skill to handle situations wisely.

“The more you smile; the chances are you will be happy”

The portion of your body, which is really visible to you, is your face. If you can give this suggestion to your lips- let me smile, spread goodness, spread happiness then you will life becomes beautiful. You can handle stress better, if you are smiling.

2.6  Nose: When the lord says concentrate on tip of your nose, it means that truth/God is right in front of you. Just as the tip of your nose is right in front of you, god is right in front of you and the only thing required is that you should be open enough to see that truth is in front of you. So you only have to be open, you have to be receptive. When you that faith, a different energy opens up for handling stress.
